What's local in Klamath Falls
Community leaders proposed the name Klamath Falls in 1893 to describe the series of rapids on the Link River, where water from Upper Klamath Lake spilled over a natural riverbed. The city sits on the lake's southeastern shore, about seventeen miles north of the California line. The economy has historically rested on agriculture, livestock and timber, and in 2023 Sky Lakes Medical Center was the largest employer in the area, with about 1,700 workers.
Underground hot water is put to work here. A downtown geothermal heating system began operating in 1984, Oregon Tech has used geothermal energy for heating since the mid-1960s, and the Ella Redkey Pool is heated by geothermal water. Oregon Tech began in 1947 as a vocational rehabilitation school for World War II veterans and moved to a campus on a geothermal site overlooking Upper Klamath Lake. Klamath Community College sits on 57 acres on the east side.
The Klamath County Fair is usually held around the first weekend of August, with a carnival, rodeo, live music and 4-H and FFA events. Why dating close to home runs out
Add up every incorporated city and town within 30 miles of Klamath Falls and you get 4 places with about 2,800 people between them, not counting Klamath Falls itself. Within 60 miles it's 12 places and about 154,000 people. Those totals count incorporated places only, so people outside city limits would add to them, but the point stands: dating apps that sort by distance start with that circle, which is why small-town members see the same faces so often.

Why Medford is out of reach for you on the big apps
The city next to a small town is often the hardest place to date from it. Medford (about 86,000 people, 56 miles from Klamath Falls) has plenty of singles, but a distance-ranked app lists them for each other first; Tinuiti's analysis of Tinder's algorithm says proximity is a key factor in who it shows you. A member in Klamath Falls ends up behind every closer profile in the deck of everyone in Medford, so the matches that should be easiest to reach are the ones the app makes hardest.
Medford has about 4 times as many people as Klamath Falls, so a member from Klamath Falls is outnumbered there roughly 4 to 1 before the ranking even starts. There are 17 other incorporated places closer to Medford than Klamath Falls is, with about 120,000 people between them, and they tend to come ahead of you in Medford's deck.
On Amarbis, ranking isn't based on distance. Choose Oregon as your region and Medford is in your pool with everyone else in Oregon, so you aren't placed behind the person's next-door neighbor because of where you live.
