What's local in La Grande

The town sits in the eastern foothills of the Blue Mountains, on the western margin of the Grande Ronde Valley, with Mount Emily rising over it to the north. Interstate 84 is the main freeway past it. The Oregon Trail passed through the valley, and the town was first settled in 1861. When the railroad arrived in 1884, it came to the flat ground slightly east of Old Town.

Eastern Oregon Normal School, a teachers college, opened in 1929 on what was then called Courthouse Hill. It became Eastern Oregon University in 1997 and is a major employer in town. The campus is four blocks from downtown, and the university says it showcases the work of artists, authors and filmmakers with events all year.

Mount Emily Recreation Area is two miles from the city and is managed by the Union County Parks Department. It starts at the edge of the valley floor at 3,000 feet and climbs past the rim to about 5,600 feet. Fox Hill is the motorized trailhead, while Owsley Canyon and Igo Lane are non-motorized, and in winter snowshoes and cross-country skis can be used from Owsley Canyon. South of town, Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area has the largest hardstem bulrush wetland remaining in Northeast Oregon, and its bird festival is usually held in May.

Within 60 miles it's 27 places and about 94,000 people. Those totals count incorporated places only, so people outside city limits would add to them, but the point stands: an app that starts with whoever lives closest builds your options from a small circle, so you keep seeing the same few profiles.

Why Kennewick is out of reach for you on the big apps

Dating in La Grande is hard, and meeting someone in Kennewick can be harder. Many dating apps lean on distance to decide who you see, and Tinuiti's analysis of Tinder's algorithm says proximity is a key factor in who it shows you. Kennewick is 80 miles away and has about 88,000 people, and most of the people there live nearer to each other than to you. When someone in Kennewick opens a distance-ranked app, their own neighbors come first, so you land behind them in their deck whatever your photos and profile say.

Kennewick has about 7 times as many people as La Grande, so a member from La Grande is outnumbered there roughly 7 to 1 before the ranking even starts. There are 61 other incorporated places closer to Kennewick than La Grande is, with about 538,000 people between them, and they tend to come ahead of you in Kennewick's deck.

On Amarbis, ranking isn't based on distance. Kennewick is in Washington, so choose Washington as your region and it's in your pool with everyone else in Washington, and you aren't placed behind the person's next-door neighbor because of where you live.
